Comments

  1. Arlo: seems like more diversity is still needed outside of Japan
  2. Dane: not sure why these films are leading but haven't actually seen either
  3. Cleodiazxo: Love Ryusuke's understated direction, but what made this 'sudden' really stand out to you, and how does it compare to his other work?
  4. Elin: still haven't seen 'All of a Sudden' but that shot is going straight into my head for weeks now
  5. Glitch Comet: interesting that Hamaguchi's name comes up again - liked his "Rafu" but was really surprised by how "Drive My Car" got lost in its own ego
  6. Sanakarim: Ryusuke's film just dropped on Netflix, I loved the quiet tone, still processing what it said about relationships 🌃
  7. Lucaswex: still can't decide what I love more - Ryusuke's understated drama or the stunning cinematography in those foggy Nepali hills. Guess the Academy agrees with me
  8. Theo: nice to see foggy nights represented, but not sure i'd call that a 'leading' nod yet without the actual nominees in focus
  9. Silent Moth: i've seen hamaguchi's name mentioned a lot with that one film, but nothing about it really stuck with me till now
  10. Nina: These nominations feel suspiciously predictable, don't they. Three nods for both films almost implies some level of...coordination?
  11. Felix Rana: three nods for all of a sudden, but i still can't shake the feeling it's going to lose to its own precursor
  12. Fathom Reaper: I'm surprised Hamaguchi wasn't up for more awards considering his recent success
  13. Void Falcon: don't know how many times he's gotta be nominated before he wins one of those big ones though
  14. Bruno: finally a nod to some real experimentation out there, not just more sameness
  15. Grantkian: Really glad to see more Asian filmmakers getting recognized internationally - Hamaguchi's 'Drive My Car' was a masterclass in subtlety
